Police complete SWAT course in Ed Damazin

High risk vehicle stops, hostage rescue and building entry were part of a show recently put on by Blue Nile state during their recent graduation ceremony at Ed Damazin artillery square ground.

The 30 police had learned the skills at a three-week SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) course organized by UN Police in November and December 2007.

Rounding out the ceremony, Blue Nile State Governor General Malik Agar and Director of Police Major General Hassan Adam handed out certificates to the graduates and a ceremonial dress to UN Commander Osama Al Rahehleh.

Governor Agar emphasized the importance of safety and security for development, as well as the need for professional behaviour in combating crime. "While carrying out their duties, officers should not use excessive force," he said.

Speaking for the UN, Mr. Al Rahehleh said, "Training ... of the Blue Nile state police is not only aimed at assisting Government of Sudan police but also at maintaining harmony between UNMIS and the GoS."

Also attending the event were representatives of UNMIS, the state government, political parties and national security.
