Pakistanis hold free medical camp at Abu Grain

In its continuing effort to assist areas lacking in medical services, the UNMIS Pakistani Contingent held a free clinic at Abu Grain in Blue Nile State on 2 July.

The camp, which treated a total of 1,367 patients, including 655 men, 376 women and 336 children, at Ali Bin Talib Primary School, was equipped with six outpatient departments, a small operating room and ECG facilities.

Complaints included malaria, diarrhoea, upper respiratory tract infections, anemia and worm infestations. Blood group classification, blood sugar and blood malaria parasite test facilities as well as medicines were provided free of cost.

Abu Grain, a village of 5,000 people, lacks such public services in the areas of health, education and safe drinking water. Baw Council representative Adul Razik Adam, village Chief Abut Muhammad Alyam and village Umda Talim Amdurfa Umda thanked UNMIS for its support, requesting similar medical assistance for neighbouring villages.

Also speaking on the occasion, Abida Asharf Jehangir Qazi, wife of Special Representative of the Secretary- General Ashraf Qazi, noted that humanitarian work promoted conducive environments for peace. She also distributed gifts and sporting goods among students of the school.
