Third Sudan Consortium - May 2008

The Sudan Consortium was held from May 5 to 7, 2008 in Oslo, Norway. The purpose of the Sudan Consortium is to provide a forum for an annual review of progress in implementing the social and economic aspects of Sudan’s 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA). The Consortium was jointly-chaired by the Government of National Unity and the Government of Southern Sudan. Invited participants include a broad range of d evelopment partners, including Sudanese government officials, NGO and private sector representatives; representatives of governments supporting Sudan; the Chair of the Assessment and Evaluation Commission, established under the CPA. The Sudan Consortium was successful in terms of meeting its two key objectives: firstly, to review the progress in the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) and Joint Assessment Mission commitments to date (2005 -2007), secondly to agree on the recovery and development priorities for the second half of the CPA period (2008 - 2011). Donor countries today pledged US$4.8 billion for Sudan for the period 2008-2011 at the end of a two-day meeting in Oslo. The meeting, known as the Sudan Consortium, was attended by 45 countries and institutions.
