Press Conference by Emmanuel Jal and Abdulgadir Salem

Monday 9 January 2006 was the first anniversary of the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, between the Government of Sudan and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army.

Celebration in KHARTOUM:
Song, dance, colour and movement filled the Nubian club in Central Khartoum, as the United Nations Mission in Sudan celebrated the occasion before an invited audience of more than 350 teenagers from local schools. The event aimed to show the teens, some of whom were from IDP schools, an awareness of peace, unity and teamwork.
The event showed in a practical way UNMIS, and UN Agency humanitarian activity across the country, with many UN agencies and Non-Governmental Organizations such as Save the Children UK, taking part. The UNMIS Peace-Keeping Force and UNMIS Police opened their doors to the public for the first time, meeting guests, answering questions and demonstrating their activities.

Other events included musical and dance performances from some of Sudan’s prominent artists, including the star attractions, Emmanuel Jal (former child soldier from the south) and Abdel Gadir Salim (legendary Arabic singer from the north), globally popular Sudanese musicians who started singing together as a primary means of promoting peace in Sudan. 'Ya Salam al Salam' (Wow to Peace!'), taken from Jal's collaborative album, ‘Cease-Fire’, recorded with Abdel Gadir Salim, was the day's signature song, and received tremendous applause from the audience.

As well as the teenagers from the Khartoum schools, audience members included girl guides, boy scouts, representatives from the Government of National Unity, Dignitaries and Academics.
