VOLUNTARY CONFIDENTIAL COUNSELING & TESTING (VCCT)
UNMIS supports and promotes Voluntary Confidential Counseling and Testing (VCCT).
VCCT is the process by which a person finds out whether or not he or she is infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. VCCT services are always voluntary and strictly confidential.
To meet this vital requirement, UNMIS will train 20 HIV/AIDS Counselors and maintain a VCCT Centre in Khartoum. It will also provide mobile services in all sectors through mobile teams which will be stationed in Juba and Kadugli respectively. Confidentiality is assured in pre- and post-HIV Antibody Testing.
VCCT includes specialized counseling on the following issues:
- HIV and AIDS information
- Pre-test or decision counseling
- Post-test Counseling
- Plans for reducing risk behaviour
VCCT is important as:
- Many people are infected but are still healthy and do not realize that they need to protect their partner(s)
- Knowing your HIV status helps reduce risk behaviour
- It can help clients plan for the future
- VCCT services include referral to appropriate health services.
Face-to-face pre- and post-HIV antibody test counseling, as well as support counseling for people Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) can be made available.
For UNMIS Personnel, HIV tests and the use of the VCCT Centre are provided free of charge. Capacity for VCCT services outside of UNMIS is limited.
