A total of 10,000 military personnel have been authorized for deployment as part of UNMIS’ multinational peacekeeping force.
They will assist and support the Government of Sudan and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) in the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
The peacekeepers are led by a Force Commander, Lieutenant General Jasbir Lidder of India.
Of the 10,000 peacekeepers, there will be 750 UN Military Observers (UNMOs), who will carry out monitoring and verification activities in their respective areas of responsibility.
Of the 10,000, approximately 4,000 peacekeepers will make up a protection force, which will be responsible for protecting UN staff, equipment, and installations as well as helping Sudanese authorities to protect any civilians who come are in imminent danger.
Another 4,000 peacekeepers will be involved in administrative and logistical support activities, along with demining and reconstruction work.
The UN Force Headquarters for the peacekeepers will be in Khartoum, and there will be a Joint Military Coordinating Office located in Juba, in southern Sudan.
In addition, there will be a Redeployment Coordination Headquarters in Kassala, in eastern Sudan, which will be responsible for coordinating and monitoring the redeployment of SPLM/A forces from Kassala to southern Sudan and six other sectors. Each of the six sectors will have a sector headquarters with the relevant support units.
