| Fire destroys 42 shops in Malakal |
 |
A fire broke out in Malakal's main market early on 8 January, burning down 42 shops, stores, and restaurants. At the state's request, UNMIS rushed a fire truck to the scene, where it spent four hours helping put out the blaze.
Malakal's County Commissioner said the fire's cause was still unknown, but ruled out electrical problems because the town had no electricity at that time of day (4 a.m.). Adding that sabotage or arson were possible, he said the state government had formed a committee to investigate the incident.
The fire was the largest in the market area since 2004, although smaller ones consuming one or two shops have occurred. |
