Community workers trained to keep animals healthy

Recognizing the vital need for healthy animals in remote villages of South Kordofan, UNMIS assisted with a two-week training course for community workers in disease control.

The Remount and Veterinary Company of UNMIS' Indian contingent briefed 20 Community Animal Health Workers in drug use and sterilization methods at a specially organized Vet Aid Camp in El Shafifa village. They also learned about proportional drug administration, signs of healthy and diseased animals and animal health.

Technical training of animal health workers in Sudan is crucial in providing primary animal health facilities in villages, where vet facilities and staff are non-existent and obtaining vet treatment for ailing animals means traveling long distances.

The Indian detachment provided a complete set of vet medicines, including antibiotics, and vet trainers from the civil vet hospital remained in the village for the entire workshop. Other partners assisting with the session included the Food and Agriculture Organization, the South Kordofan Director General of Animal Resources and the non-governmental organization Om Sharbhiba.

The Remount and Veterinary Detachment is equipped with needed equipment, medicine and vaccines to treat all species of animals. The detachment has also assisted in setting up Community Veterinary Centres managed by community workers in areas of meagre vet facilities. The infrastructure and medicines for the Centres are contributed by various UN agencies.
