In an effort to curb
the spread of Rift Valley Fever (RVF)
among inmates of police detention
centres in Blue Nile State, two non-governmental
organizations (NGOs) have agreed to
supply them with mosquito nets.
The International Rescue Organization
in Ed Damazine will provide 100 nets
and GOAL in Kurmuk 10, acting on a
request by UNMIS Ed Damazine Commander
Osama Al Rahahleh. According to the
World Health Organization, some 96
of 329 afflicted people in White Nile,
Sinnar and Gezira states of North
Sudan had died from the disease as
of 14 November.

Originally
contracted by animals, the disease
can be passed to humans handling or
eating raw meat as well as through
mosquitoes. Symptoms are initially
mild and flu-like but can lead to
complications and possible death.
UNMIS handed over the 110 nets in
a ceremony at Blue Nile state police
headquarters on 20 November to Police
Director Major General Hassan Adam.
The event was witnessed by the Deputy
Director of Blue Nile state police,
senior Blue Nile state police officers,
Mohammed Tuom, Chief of the International
Rescue Organization, UNMIS Commander
Al Rahahleh and the media.
