Armed groups integrate with Sudanese forces

More than 47,400 of roughly 56,900 members of Other Armed Groups (OAGs) in Southern Sudan have integrated with the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) and about 9,500 with the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF), according to figures presented at a recent ceremony.

The ceremony, on integration of OAGs, was organized by the Sudanese National Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) Commission and the OAG Collaborative Committee. Participants at the event, which was held at Khartoum's SAF Officers Club, included UNMIS' Deputy Force Commander and other mission staff as well as senior Sudanese government and SAF officials.

Weapons disarmed in Adar

Of OAG members integrating with the SPLA, some 25,499 joined the army, 5,618 the Southern Sudan Police Service, 2,136 the prison department, 3,715 the wildlife authority, 480 the fire brigade and 217 the civil service, while 9,744 underwent DDR. Of OAG members going to the SAF, 2,307 underwent DDR, while 5,578 joined the army, 574 the Government of Sudan police, and the rest the civil service.
