Lainya County gets administrative block

In an effort to improve civil-military relations in Lainya County, UNMIS has built a new administrative block in one of the area's payams (townships).

Inaugurated by UNMIS Force Commander Lt. General Jasbir Lidder on 13 August, the block was built through a mission Quick Impact Project by the Bangladeshi Contingent, in collaboration with the local community.

The administrative block was needed due to deteriorating civil-military relations in Lainya following the redeployment of some 10,000 Sudan People Liberation Army (SPLA) soldiers to the county.

UNMIS Civil Affairs and Human Rights sections agreed to set up the administrative center, which cost about $24,809, to help resolve disputes and strengthen the local administration.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, witnessed by cheering school children and local leaders, Col. Vincent Kujo Lobung, Commissioner of Lainya County, thanked UNMIS for its efforts. "UNMIS is moving the town to the village, as promised by the late Dr. John Garang. Today we have touched the fruits of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA)," he said.

The Force Commander thanked the people of Lainya for their support in making the project a success, and assured them of UNMIS' continued support in implementing the CPA as well as ensuring an end to war in Sudan, so that people could enjoy the benefits of peace, democracy and good governance.
