| Soldiers of Sudan’s former opposing armies recently trained together to boost their knowledge of the country’s peace accord.
Members of the recently formed Joint Integrated Units (JIUs), which combine soldiers from both Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) and Sudan Armed Forces (SAF), attended on 3 October at UNMIS Abyei a one-day workshop on the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

Addressing the gathering, UNMIS Abyei Head of Office Chris Johnson urged the former enemies to act as ambassadors of the CPA. She also reminded them that SPLA and SAF JIU soldiers were now one force and should be carrying out their duties as stipulated in the peace agreement.
UNMIS Abyei Commander Col Elias Mwelwa told the soldiers they had become the pillars of Sudan’s security. Whether SAF or SPLA, they were wearing the same uniform with its ‘shaking hands’ badge symbolizing unity. |
