PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICE

The UNMIS Public Information Office provides information about UNMIS and its activities to all the stakeholders in the Sudanese peace process.

The stakeholders include the Sudanese people, from the community to the national level; the two parties to the peace process; the Sudanese media; and the humanitarian community.

In addition, the UNMIS Public Information Office provides information to the international media, troop contributing and donor countries, and the Sudanese diaspora.

In the wake of the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, the UNMIS Public Information Office will assist other parts of the UN system in Sudan to reach out to targeted audiences with relevant messages. In broad terms, the messages will promote peace among Sudanese, at both the national and community levels. The targeted audiences include internally displaced persons, refugees and returnees, demobilized soldiers, women's groups and students.

Some of the methods which the UNMIS Public Information Office will use to reach these audiences include an FM broadcast radio network, printed and video materials, and community outreach centres. Traditional methods of information dissemination, such as story-telling and singing, will also be encouraged at the community level.
