The UNMIS Police component is tasked with assisting in the development of Sudan’s police service.
Its aim is to help create a modern, effective and efficient Sudanese police service which operates fairly and impartially and in observance of the rule of law, with respect for human rights and in accordance with internationally accepted standards of conduct.
When fully deployed, the UNMIS Police team will consist of more than 700 police officers and policing experts from a range of UN member states. Presently 556 Un Police Advisors from 36 Countries are already in the field.
The UNMIS Police component is led by the UN Police Commissioner, Brigadier Kai Vittrup and the Deputy Police Commissioner Adeyemi Samuel Ogunjemilusi of Nigeria.
At the local and regional levels, UN Police will oversee operations from a “regional” headquarters, located at Juba in Southern Sudan, as well from other regional sector and team sites.
The UNMIS Police component’s core function is to monitor the work of the Sudanese police and, where possible, advise them about modern policing methods. UN Police will also be on the alert for potential abuses of human rights, police powers or any other unacceptable police behaviour.
While developing a close professional relationship with the Sudanese police service, at all levels of the organisation, UN Police will actively identify areas of operation in which specialized training would be beneficial, and will facilitate such training through partners and sponsors from the international community.
UN Police will also meet community leaders, opinion formers and representative groups in order to continuously assess the policing needs of the community.
