Duties and responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Chief Engineer, the Civil
Engineer will perform the following duties:
- Assist in the application of basic formulas to complete
routine calculations for small projects or minor phases
of broader assignments related to engineering requirements
of UNMIS such as design , construction or repair of
buildings, roads bridges, airfields helipads, railways,
docks, waste disposal systems, flood control systems,
water treatment facilities, electrical power generation
and distribution systems, environmental control systems,
field defenses, mine detection and clearance and other
related structures and activities in the field. To
this end he/she will:
- Prepare graphs, curves and tables; Record factual
data in tests and observation studies; Perform drafting
and minor detail designs; Search technical reports
to obtain information related to projects in process:
Assist in surveying work to determine site selection
for structures; Assist in calculation of stresses
and strain affecting proposed structures by making
routine calculations of such factors as estimated
load, water pressure, soil characteristics temperature
fluctuations, and nature of building materials used;
Prepare requisitions for procurement of construction
supplies; Maintain liaison with local contractors
and suppliers concerning the provision of supplies
and services.
Compentencies:
- Basic engineering skills that indicate capability
to progress to more difficult projects; demonstrated
ability to apply good judgement in the context of
assignments given.
- Planning and organising: Ability to establish priorities
and to plan and coordinate own work.
- Technology awareness: Good computer skills, to include
basic knowledge of word processing and spreadsheets
and engineering software
- Communications: Good spoken and written communications
skills including ability to draft clear and concise
reports
- Teamwork and Respect for Diversity: Good interpersonal
skills and demonstrated ability to develop and maintain
effective work relationships in a multi cultural,
multi ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect
for diversity.
Qualifications:
- Education: Civil Engineering Diploma. University
degree in Civil engineering, Electrical Engineering,
Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, or other appropriate
specialty or sub-specialty or extensive training and
experience in other appropriate occupation would be
an asset.
- Experience: 3 years of engineering experience at
national level preferably with facilities for peace-keeping
forces or United Nations field Missions
- Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English
and Arabic. Knowledge of other languages spoken in
Sudan an advantage.
