Duties and responsibilities:
Under the overall supervision of the Chief GIS section, the incumbent is responsible for the following duties:
- Digitize and produce maps for operations in the field and help with a catch of the decisions;
- Assist GIS staff on the software/hardware side such as GPS data transfer, GPS survey, Plotter ink replacement, loading roll of paper for printing maps;
- Scanning maps;
- Occasional travel in sectors will be necessary;
- Perform other related duties;
- Analyze and interpret satellite images for either digitization or providing necessary information requested;
- Prepare and carry out the impression of maps requested on line and hard copies;
- Quality control of GIS Product by using Arc SDE or on hard copies
Competencies:
- Professionalism - In-depth understanding of all facets, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), cartography, surveying, Global Positioning System (GPS), Remote Sensing (RS), Web based Mapping Services (WMS) and the Information Technology (IT) requirements to support such systems.
- Planning and Organizing: Ability to establish priorities and to plan, coordinate and monitor own work plan.
- Judgment / Decision Making - Demonstrated sound judgment and applying technical expertise to resolve a range of issues / problems. Ability to proactively seek and recommend sound solutions.
- Creativity - Ability to actively seek to improve programme / services, offer new and different options to solve problems / meet client needs, and promote / persuade others to consider new ideas.
- Technological Awareness - Very good computer skills including proficiency in all office applications. Very high awareness of capabilities and capacities of all GI related technology and applications.
- Teamwork - Ability to operate effectively across organizational boundaries; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a multi-cultural environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
Qualification:
- Language: Fluency in spoken and written English and Arabic. Knowledge of other Sudanese languages would be an asset.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent Diploma in the field of GIS. A Degree an asset. Knowledge and practical experience of GIS software: ArcGIS (ArcInfo, ArcEditor, ArcView, and its extensions); ERDAS Imagine Advantage; Other GIS and/or IT knowledge.
Familiarity with information technology (IT), web technology, GIS data and office automation software: Knowledge of database such as Access and programming language .
- Experience: A minimum of 5 years of progressively relevant experience in the field of GIS.
