Duties and responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Section Chief/Head of Unit, the incumbent will perform the following duties.
- Carry out duties specific to units assigned such as Guard Force, Tracking, Training, Plans and Policies, Investigations, Security Support Unit as per the requirements of the section directed by supervisors.
- Liaise activities with the local counterparts such as the local police, national security, traffic police, military components, municipal and civil authorities.
- Monitor the activities with respect to security operations in the different UN locations and assist in providing expert advice on latest developments in certain areas and advise if it is accessible for staff.
- Monitor leave, attendance of national staff such as Security Assistants, Security supervisors, guards etc in their respective units including their work on overtime, night differential etc. He/She should also if required conduct daily briefings to the shifts and assign security staff to various functions or posts.
- Translate materials including investigation reports for security units
- Implement security guidelines pertaining to access control, parking, reception, physical security, tracking procedures, security clearance procedures etc issued by senior management from time to time. He/She will also ensure that all shift supervisors and through them their respective shift personnel are also kept informed of the guidelines from time to time. He/She will also make recommendations from time to time to the supervising officer on basic operational issues, based on his knowledge and experience of local areas and security needs.
- During periods of heightened security, the National Security Officer is to assume specific senior responsibilities and provide pertinent information to his/her supervisors in close coordination with authorities, INGO's/NGO's and other relevant sources.
- Provide inputs for the performance evaluation of the national staff working in their respective units such as Security Assistants, shift supervisors, and security guards.
- Counsel, coach and mentor security personnel under command
- Prepare written reports as directed by supervisors.
- Perform any other duty as required.
Competencies:
- Professionalism- extensive knowledge and experience of security issues; reasonably good knowledge of UN security with regard to access control and other security procedures.
- Planning and Organizing- ability to plan and organise security operations
- Client Orientation- professional and courteous attitude and the ability to work in a stressful environment
- Teamwork- ability to facilitate teamwork for the benefit of the organisation. Ability to work in a multi ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity
- Accountability- functions in compliance with UN rules regulations, procedures and policies. Assumes full responsibility for all actions and decisions.
- Communication- Effective oral communication skills and demonstrated ability to explain UN procedures and rules.
- Technological Awareness: Fully proficient computer skills and use of relevant software and other applications, e.g. word processing, spreadsheets, internal databases, Internet, etc.
Qualifications:
- Education: Completion of secondary education and relevant training in military or police procedures and practices. Training in self-defense techniques
- Experience:
- Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in all areas of security operations. Prior experience with the UN and police/military service at senior levels is an asset.
- Other requirements: Must be physically and mentally fit. Should have the ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and work in demanding situations with ease.
- Languages: Fluency in written and spoken English as well as Arabic is essential. Knowledge of other languages spoken in Sudan would be an added asset.
