Duties and responsibilities:

Under the direct supervision of the Officer in Charge (OIC), Security Unit/Duty Officer the Radio Operator will perform the following duties:

  • Conduct radio checks with all Security Guards on duty daily.
  • Conduct radio checks with all International Security Officers at 20:00 hours daily and also at 10:00 hours on weekends and holidays.
  • Monitor the various radio channels and report all security incidents to the Security Duty Officer. Broadcast all security related information to UNMIS Staff Members via the various radio channels as directed by OIC Security Unit Security Officer/Security Duty Officer.
  • Provide necessary assistance to all UN staff and staff of other affiliated organizations who may need security assistance through radio or telephone channels.
  • Advises all radio users who stray to the security channel with matters not related to security to switch to the proper channel. Respond to all telephone calls coming into the radio room and direct the person to the appropriate section.
  • Maintain control of all spare keys to UNMIS offices.
  • Register the withdrawal and return of all keys in the key register log book.
  • Maintain the key control register.
  • Record and maintain all activities occurring during his/her shifts.
  • Maintain an undated list of all emergency contact numbers.
  • Maintain the telephone numbers and call signs of all senior security personnel. Maintain and be familiar with the weekly/monthly duty roster/s for the various sections within the mission. Maintain all equipment assigned to the radio room.
  • Report any damages of any equipment assigned to the radio room and arrange for the repairs of such equipment.

Competencies:

  • Professionalism: Excellent knowledge of radio/voice procedures, excellent use of UHF/HF/VHF communications system, ability to remain calm in emergency situations, willingness to work extra hours, alertness, emotional stability, ability to gather information from a wide variety of sources, a high sense of confidentiality.
  • Planning and Organizing: ability to prioritized activities, monitor and adjust plans to meet changing requirements and uses time efficiently.
  • Communications: Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, ability to provide information clearly both orally and in writing.
  • Technology Awareness: Knowledge in the use and maintenance of standard security and communications equipment, basic computer proficiency in standard applications.
  • Teamwork: Courteous and tactful with the ability to work with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Completion of high school education and relevant training in military or police in the communications field
    Work Experience:
  • Experience: A minimum of five years with military or police in the signals unit or seven years of experience in the private sector
  • Language: Fluency in spoken and written English, Knowledge of other languages spoken in Sudan an advantage
