Description of Duties:

Under general supervision of the Regional Medical Officer the incumbent will provide Emergency medical care, providing basic and advanced life support assistance to injured or ill persons. In addition performs routine medical/nursing care, first aid care and referral services to all mission employees and other personnel within UNMIS as follows:

  • Provides information on health precautions, immunizations recommended and assist in registration of patients and their case files. Maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Assume responsibility for proper sterilization of medical instruments;
  • Participate in updating Nursing Protocols;
  • Assist in developing and maintaining an efficient inventory and stock control of medical supplies. Check expiration dates of drugs. Recommend acquisition of fresh supply to support daily operations to the Medical Officer.
  • Prepare daily statistical report of nursing activities;
  • Assess patients' health problems by taking brief medical history, taking vital signs, temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure;
  • Evaluate and plan patients care visiting the "walk-in" clinic; order routine laboratory test (e.g., urinalysis, hemoglobin, vision tests); provide care/advice accordingly or facilitate referral to the United Nations Medical Officer or to an outside physicians, as indicted;
  • Ensure preparedness of staff traveling on mission or re-assignment, including administration of appropriate vaccines for international travel as well as
  • Instructions on other travel-related ailments and on the content and potential uses of the "Travel Kit".
  • Respond to emergency calls according to established medical emergency protocol, and assist the Medical Officer in providing adequate care when necessary; ensure effective liaison between patient and private doctor.
  • paramedics, family members, colleagues as appropriate; and document case findings;
  • Perform ECG, x-ray and other medical exams such as blood tests, glucose, cholesterol and urine exams as required.
  • Perform electrocardiograms, if required and answer telephone medical inquiries.

Competencies and Skills: "Hands on" experience in clinical nursing. Considerable knowledge and skill in emergency medicine is a requirement. Ability to establish priorities and to plan, coordinate and monitor own work-plan. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relations in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity. Good knowledge of Microsoft Word and Lotus Notes. Knowledge of Access is an asset.

Qualifications: Registered Professional Nurse with at least a BSc Degree /Diploma from a recognized School of Nursing. Special training in emergency medicine and certificates in ECG and CPR or Basic Life Support is an asset.
Experience: 5 - 7 years of responsible experience in the application of nursing skills.
Languages: Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of one or more UN official languages is an advantage.
