National Professional Translator/Interpreters are employed for functions in UNMIS which by their very nature require national knowledge and experience and so could not be carried out as effectively by international professionals. In this respect and under the supervision of the section/unit Chief, the incumbent shall perform the following duties:

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Translate a wide range and variety of documents (including official correspondence with government of Sudan, press releases, periodical publications, etc.) from Arabic and English, in such a manner that the translation will be a finished product ready for publication;
  • Revise as necessary the work of unit translators; monitor and control their performance and provide regular advice and guidance as required; assist in matters of terminology and style to ensure uniformity and quality;
  • Resolve translation/editorial issues (i.e. clarification on ambiguities, technical meanings, etc.) through consultation with authors;
  • Attend meetings as part of a team, takes notes either directly from statements delivered in English and Arabic or from the interpretation and subsequently uses the notes to produce draft summary records, subject to revision
  • Perform other related duties as required.

  • Translation: Sound Translation skills and drafting ability; general vocabulary of a level and range appropriate to the contents and intended use of the text in hand; ability to use all sources of reference, consultation and information relevant to text at hand; ability to maintain a reasonable speed and volume and output relative to the difficulty of the text and the specified deadline.
  • Planning and Organizing: Ability to plan and organize own work
  • Commitment to Continuous Learning: Commitment to pursuing in-service training to acquire the ability to perform at higher levels of difficulty and complexity.
  • Communications: Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Technological Awareness: Acquisition of experience in using translation technology and word-processing packages.

Education: Advance University degree in languages, with specialization in languages or translator/interpreter diploma from a recognised university level institution
Experience: At least 6 years of progressively responsible professional experience in translation/ revision/interpretation work experience at the national level in translation/interpretation
Languages skills: Excellent command of English and a thorough knowledge of Arabic.
Other skills: Demonstrated ability to apply good judgement in the context of assignments given. Fully conversant with computer operation including Word, Excel PowerPoint and Access. High level of demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills. Ability to type accurately in English and Arabic. Demonstrated effective organizational skills and ability to handle work in an efficient and timely manner.
