National Professional Officers are employed for functions in UNMIS which by their very nature require national knowledge and experience and so could not be carried out as effectively by international professionals
Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the overall supervision of the Chief Radio Unit and reporting directly to the Chief Editor, the Radio producer assists with the continuous training of the Unit's staff in writing, features production and enhancing the public affairs programmes. To this end the incumbent supervises one of the news and programme teams within limits of delegated authority and depending on location, may be responsible for the following duties:
- Track, research, assess and analyze information on assigned topics/issues
- Gather information from diverse sources - local and international
- Contribute to the selection of the topics/stories for the news bulletin or the news magazines broadcast daily on radio. Develop ideas for spot news coverage
- Maintain journalistic standards under deadline and pressure
- Manage a team of reporters and presenters for the news editions when tasked
- Supervise the editorial content of the reporting and the news broadcast
- Anchor major news cast when tasked
- Coordinate the news broadcast in local languages
- Ensure the follow-up of the tasks and work of the news teams
- Coordinate closely with local broadcast radio producers in the sectors
- Replace Radio editors in the sectors upon request
- Draft/compile specific types of information products for target audiences, specially for civic education or campaigns related to the peace process;
- In consultation with others identify and propose information opportunities, activities and approaches, taking into account the situation/topic and target audience.
- Respond to a variety of inquires and information requests internally and externally;
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Competencies:
- Thorough knowledge of and practical experience in media management, audience outreach and radio broadcast production;
- Demonstrated knowledge of current affairs, especially relating to Sudan
- Ability to identify public affairs need and produce written communication products in a clear and concise manner;
- Ability to diplomatically handle sensitive situations with target audiences and to cultivate productive relationships with local population and media representatives;
- Ability to establish priorities and to plan coordinate and monitor own work plan;
- Fully proficient with latest media technology including desktop publishing, radio broadcast and related computer skills;
- Excellent communication skills (spoken and written) required;
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with people in a multicultural, multiethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity;
Qualifications:
- Education Advance University degree in journalism, communications or other related field, or combination of University Degree and experience in related field
- Work Experience: Minimum of 3 to 5 years of progressively responsible professional experience in journalism, communications at the national level; international experience is desirable.
- Language : Fluency in written and spoken English and Arabic required. Knowledge of other languages spoken in Sudan an asset
