National Professional Officers are employed for functions in UNMIS which by their very nature require national knowledge and experience and so could not be carried out as effectively by international professionals
Description of Duties:
Under the general supervision of the Chief Aviation Safety, the incumbent performs the following duties:
- Assists in advising the Chief Administrative Officer on all aviation safety related matters.
- Implements the UN Aviation Safety Programme through monitoring of vendors performances, conducting site inspections, compiling aviation statistics and maintaining and processing of all aircraft occurrence reports.
- Identifies safety trends and participates in accident and incident investigation.
- Distributes safety literature, newsletters and consolidated reports to appropriate areas.
- The incumbent also assists the Missions Chief Aviation Safety in monitoring and updating the occurrence reporting system.
- Performs other duties as required by the Chief Aviation Safety Officer

- Judgment/Decision-making: Demonstrated ability to identify key issues in complex situations, to assess information and the potential impact of recommendations and proposed courses of action, to treat sensitive and confidential information appropriately and to make difficult decisions when necessary;
- Teamwork: Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to operate effectively across Organisation boundaries; ability to establish and maintain effective partnerships and working relations in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity;
- Technological Awareness: Computer literacy; ability to manage the development and adoption of new applications for air operations.
Qualifications:
- Education: Advanced university degree in Air Transportation, Aviation Engineering, Safety Management or Air Traffic Control or graduation from equivalent military establishment or military flight/air traffic control training. Professional Pilot License or Engineering License or Air Traffic Controller License is required
- Experience: Minimum of 3 to 5 years technical experience in air transportation or air traffic control operations, aviation safety or aviation engineering; at least two years experience at the international level. Aviation Safety Qualified essential. Accident Investigation Qualified desirable. Expert knowledge in the technical field of aviation safety and accident prevention, experience in use of ICAO documentation desirable. Field peacekeeping experience is an advantage.
- Language: Fluency in written and spoken English is essential; knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
