Duties and Responsibilities:

Under general supervision of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and the Regional Medical Officer, the incumbent will ensure smooth customary work flow of the clinic; supervise clinic staff and delegate duties to the Senior Nurse; Assure readiness for rapid response to emergency medical conditions and casualties. Ensure preparedness of forward dispatch medical teams with necessary Emergency Kits for deployment to casualty site; assure availability of consumables (including blood units) and emergency kit at all times; involves UN designated physicians in the operation concept of the clinic; liaise with UN aviation officer and UN Security Coordinator for air evacuation of critical cases to Khartoum or abroad in consultation with the CMO; forms good link with African Union peace keeping Force for deployment of helicopters for air evacuation from remote places; collaborate with NGOs and other Humanitarian medical units operating in the region. The National Medical Officer will also perform following duties:

  • Undertake day-to-day duties, e.g. walk-in clinic, emergencies, pre-placement and periodic medical examinations, immunizations etc
  • Refer staff to outside specialists as necessary
  • Follow-up with outside specialists
  • Provide health education
  • Participate in addressing work environment and occupational health issues.
  • Liaise with UN-Military Medical Units in the mission and Government of Sudan Medical Facilities in the Region.
  • Follow the United nations established policies and procedures regarding medical clearances, sick leave and medical evacuations
  • Deputize for other senior Medical Officers during absences.
  • Manage day to day mission medical support operations by ensuring availability of supplies and proper functioning of the medical equipment
  • Ensure appropriate training programmes are implemented in order to maintain and develop the medical capabilities (e.g. health education, HIV/AIDS prevention, first aid and CPR.

Competencies:

  • Professionalism: Knowledge and hands on experience in Clinical and Emergency medicine.
    Planning and organizing: Ability to establish priorities and to plan, co-ordinate and monitor own work plan and those under supervision.
  • Teamwork: Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relations in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
  • Communication: Good interpersonal and oral and written communication skills.
  • Technological Awareness: Solid computer skills and good knowledge of relevant medical databases.

Education: Doctorate in Medicine. Residency in one of the medical specialities, preferably internal medicine
Experience: At least 5 years of progressive clinical experience in the medical field. Experience in emergency Medicine is an asset.
Language: Fluency in oral and written English and Arabic. Knowledge of other languages spoken in Sudan an advantage.
Other skills: Training in military medical planning and tropical diseases is highly desirable.
