National Professional Officers are employed for functions in UNMIS which by their very nature require national knowledge, culture experience and languages. In this respect and under the supervision of the Unit Chief the incumbent will perform the following functions:

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Role of the HIV/AIDS Policy Unit is to provide the mission with HIV/AIDS roving awareness, VCCT promotions and services, designing and disseminating IEC material for behaviour change communication, brochure productions, HIV/AIDS mass media programmes, liaison with Sudan National Aids Programme and other stakeholders, language translations/interpretations during HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns, creativity and innovative communications including promotion of learning through drama and or role plays; liaison and linkages in mainstreaming HIV/AIDS in DDR programmes. To this end the Training Officer (HIV/AIDS) will perform the following functions:

  • Provide mobile Mission-wide HIV/AIDS awareness particularly at Sector level
  • Assist in Training of Peer educators (TOPE) in HIV/AIDS facilitation
  • Promote and offer VCCT services
  • Receipts, issues and reproduces training packages
  • Assist in monitoring, assessing and evaluation of training
  • Provide VCCT services to make translation in Arabic during HIV/AIDS awareness sessions or as may be required
  • Liaise with Sectors in the maintenance of HIV/AIDS libraries
  • Assist in setting up and functioning sector based HIV/AIDS Committees
  • Promote positive behaviour and assist in advocacy against sexual exploitation and abuse, gender sensitivity and all forms of violence against women and girls
  • Assist in mission-wide sustained condom promotion and replenishments
  • Maintain database for HIV/AIDS Committees
  • Act as link between UNMIS and other stakeholders particularly Sudan National AIDS Programme (SNAP) and uniformed services
  • Provide technical support to DDR Unit in mainstreaming of HIV/AIDS in he DDR programme

Compentencies:

  • Cross-Cultural Common Expertise: Awareness and appreciation of client cultural differences; Awareness of their own capacity and limitations; Sensitivity and respect for diversity. International experience in a multicultural, multi ethnic environment.
  • Judgment and professionalism: Discretion, confidentiality, and sound judgment in dealing with sensitive issues. Professional, independent, and ethical practice essential.
  • Communication & interpersonal skills: Highly developed communication skills as well as good interpersonal skills. The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a changeable and demanding working environment is required.
  • Language: Excellent writing skills in English and Arabic. Knowledge of other Sudanese languages an asset.

Qualification and Skills:

  • Education: Advance University degree in Public Health and Clinical Science or its equivalent or combination of University Degree and experience in related fields. Trained and qualified in HIV/AIDS training and/or counselling, or possesses positive attitude to undertake training during the assignment under the guidance of the HIV/AIDS Policy Adviser.
  • Experience: A minimum of 5 years professional experience in the Public Health and Clinical Science field and a seasoned HIV/AIDS awareness trainer with focus on implementation of National HIV/AIDS prevention programmes. Preventive and/or community based health an asset.
  • Other Skills: Prior experience with Sudan Government HIV/AIDS programmes particularly in the uniformed services, NGOs and UN Agencies or any other international organization.
